Psychotherapy Counselling Styles used by Mindsoup.

Psychotherapy styles are the official recognised theories that I have trained in, and below are the four main counselling styles that I use. My integrative approach uses a range of styles in order to deal with a wide variety of issues allowing flexibility to suit your individual needs.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

CBT helps to find and implement coping mechanisms and alternative ways of dealing with concerns, problems or unhelpful behaviour. This can bring quick solutions and focus as well as life- long skills. CBT helps you challenge and identify your automatic thoughts.

Basically what we think affects how we feel, and how we feel affects our behaviour (which causes our actions and reactions). These reactions have a consequence to ourselves and others, which if not helpful can be addressed with CBT, giving more positive and constructive, healthy outcomes.

Person Centred Therapy

Encourages self- awareness and self -actualisation. Helps look at behavioural patterns and personality traits. Highlights unhelpful or destructive repeated behaviour.

In other words, it helps you work out who you really are, find true acceptance of yourself and discover what you can do to improve and grow emotionally to be the best you can possibly be.

The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.”
Carl Rogers (Quote from Carl Rogers- Founder of Person Centred Counselling)

A truly empathic approach, encouraging and supporting you to explore your feelings, enabling you to off- load your issues or upsets. This allows a safe and supportive place to outpour deep, buried and often very difficult and painful feelings, and look at how you can release them or find more helpful ways of dealing with them.

“What is necessary to change a person is to change his awareness of himself. “
Abraham Maslow (
Quote from Abraham Maslow – Originator of Humanistic Counselling)

Solution Focussed Brief Therapy

An approach that helps deal with and seek solutions to a problem or blocks you may be experiencing. This is also helpful for Life Coaching support and corporate training as it explores inter personal and life challenges such as:

What is your ambition?

Where do you want to be?

Where do you see your preferred future?

How do I get past this block?

How can I recognise and build on my positive resources?

Solution Focussed Therapy builds motivation and personal strengths.

EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing treatment. For helping with traumas, PTSD and Phobias. When a person is very upset, their brain cannot process information in the usual way. One moment becomes “stuck in time,” and recalling a trauma can feel as bad as going through it the first time as the images, sounds, smells, and feelings have not changed. These memories have a lasting negative effect that interferes with the way a person sees the world and the way they relate to other people.

EMDR can have a direct effect on the way that the brain processes information. Normal information processing is resumed, so following a successful EMDR session, a person no longer relives the images, sounds, and feelings when the event is brought to mind. You still remember what happened, but it is less upsetting. EMDR can have a similar affect as to what occurs naturally during dreaming (REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Therefore, EMDR can be thought of as a physiologically based therapy that helps a person see disturbing material in a new and less distressing way.
